THE MEAT INDUSTRY
-According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, approximately 70 billion animals are slaughtered globally every year.
-Modern meat production occurs in facilities called ‘factory farms’- operations that treat animals as production units, not sentient creatures.
POULTRY
In recent years, India’s poultry industry has grown rapidly. The country’s combination of factory farms and small butcher shops, has made it the world’s third largest chicken and egg producer.
However, immensely cruel methods are often use in the transportation and slaughtering of hens and roosters.
During slaughter, chickens’ throats are slit and they suffer extreme pain before consciousness.
Some remain conscious during the de-feathering process, during which they are submerged in boiling hot water.
Artificial selection and growth promoting drugs are used to make hens at an abnormal rate.
Female hens live out their lives in cramped conditions, covered in their own waste.
The birds are placed in wire enclosures called ‘battery cages’.
Their claws grow long and gnarled and twist into the floor of the wired cages.
Male chicks are placed in plastic bags to suffocate or churned and killed in high speed grinders.
Pork Industry
Pigs are raised indoors in cramped, confined spaces.
Piglets’ tails are cut off and their teeth are clipped. Male pigs are castrated without sedatives
Pregnant sows are confined to ‘gestation crates’ that are just 2 feet wide
In Eastern regions of India, pigs are killed by ramming iron rods through their throats.
During transport to the slaughter house, pigs are crammed into trucks with no food or water.
They are packed so tight that their intestines poke of their rectum.
In Western parts of India, pigs are often killed by having an iron rod rammed into their hearts.
